FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions are a good place to start.

Retirement brings a different set of decisions than the years spent saving for it. Here are answers to some of the questions people commonly have about Blackburn and beginning the retirement-income conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Blackburn Retirement Strategies do?

Blackburn helps people better understand how the savings they've built can support the retirement they want to live.

Our conversations focus on questions such as where retirement income will come from, how long savings may need to last, what could disrupt the plan and where greater predictability may be helpful.

The goal is to make those decisions easier to understand so you can approach them with greater clarity and confidence.

Who does Blackburn typically work with?

Blackburn primarily works with people who are retired, approaching retirement or have retirement savings from a former employer.

The common thread is that the conversation is beginning to shift from simply accumulating savings to understanding how those savings may need to support life in retirement.

Do I need to be retired already?

No.

In fact, beginning the conversation before retirement can give you more time to understand the decisions ahead.

If you're within roughly three years of retirement, it can be a good time to begin thinking about where your retirement income may come from and what you want your savings to accomplish.

What happens during the first conversation?

We start with you.

We'll talk about what you want retirement to look like, what you're looking forward to, what concerns you and the questions that are already on your mind.

From there, we'll begin making sense of the retirement-income decisions that may be relevant to your situation and determine whether another conversation would be helpful.

Is there a cost for the first conversation?

No. There is no cost for the initial conversation with Blackburn.

The purpose of that conversation is to understand where you are, answer questions we can appropriately address and determine whether it makes sense to continue the conversation.

Do I need to know exactly what I'm looking for before we talk?

Not at all.

Many people know what they want retirement to feel like but aren't sure what questions they should be asking or how all of the pieces fit together.

You don't need to arrive with a solution in mind. A good place to start is simply telling us what you hope retirement looks like and what's currently on your mind.

Can Blackburn manage my investments?

No.

Blackburn Retirement Strategies is an insurance-focused retirement income company. We do not manage stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds or investment portfolios, and we do not provide investment-management services.

Our role is to provide retirement-income education and, when appropriate, discuss insurance strategies that may be relevant to the retirement-income questions we're addressing.

Can Blackburn help with retirement savings from a former employer?

That can be an important reason to begin a conversation.

Retirement savings left with a former employer may give you decisions to consider as you approach or enter retirement.

Rather than beginning with what you should do with that account, we first want to understand what you need those savings to accomplish and how they fit into the retirement you're preparing for.

What if my retirement savings are still in my current employer's plan?

You can still begin the conversation.

Whether money in a current employer's retirement plan is available to move depends on the plan and your individual circumstances.

Even when those savings aren't currently accessible, someone approaching retirement can still begin learning, asking questions and preparing for the decisions that may come later.

What happens after the first conversation?

If it makes sense to continue, we'll identify the information needed to better understand your retirement-income picture and the questions we're trying to answer.

The next conversation can then be more specific to your situation rather than beginning with generic ideas or products.
